The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, laid the foundation stone for the construction of 324 housing units over some 14 arpents, at Côte d’Or on Tuesday 13 February 2024.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Housing and Land Use Planning, and Minister of Tourism, Mr Steven Obeegadoo, and the Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, attended the ceremony in the presence of Ministers, Parliamentary Private Secretaries, Members of Parliament, representatives of public departments and local authorities, and other dignitaries.

In a statement following the ceremony, the Prime Minister underlined that the 324 housing units were part of the first phase of the implementation of the 12 000 60m2 residential units project by the New Social Living Development Ltd (NSLD). He recalled that the first phase of the NSLD project comprised the construction of some 8 000 residential units across the 20 Constituencies.

The Prime Minister also expressed satisfaction regarding the construction of the 324 housing units project which, he deemed, would not only provide a roof to the future owners but also give them dignity. He added that the contracting company would deliver part of the project by July 2024 if there were no setbacks due to weather conditions.

The project, he stated, is ideally situated with its mountain scenery and is adjacent to several amenities such as a football ground, a village hall, and the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex. Mr Jugnauth mentioned, too, several facilities that would be included in the project for the benefit of future residents namely a multipurpose hall, jogging tracks, a children playground, and a petanque terrain.

He indicated that a batch of 76 housing units would be built in Valetta as well. Mr Jugnauth stressed that 10% of the NSLD residential units would be allocated to families listed under the Social Register of Mauritius.

Moreover, Mr Jugnauth reiterated Government’s commitment to work for the welfare of the population. According to him, the various achievements regarding infrastructural projects and economic growth are a testimony of Government’s determination for the country’s progress and prosperity. The Prime Minister thus recalled the construction of 4 413 housing units between 2015 and 2024, and the recent kick-off of the NSLD 12 000 residential units project.
