Mauritius celebrates a new centenarian

Mrs Marie Mercedes Maude Callou of Forest-Side, born on 20 February 1923, celebrated her 100th birthday, on 25 February 2023, in Floréal, surrounded by her family and friends.
On that occasion, Mrs Callou was offered a cheque of Rs 26,203 by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity; a pendulum; a bouquet; the centenarian medal ; and a certificate. The National Solidarity Fund of the Ministry also gave her a cheque of Rs 10,000, and she received a gift on behalf of the Senior Citizen Council.
Mrs Marie Mercedes Maude Callou, born Appadoo, originates from Mahebourg. She studied up to standard IV. Her father, Mr Eugene Appadoo, worked as a driver with no fixed employer while her mother, Mrs Deschamps Marie Henrietta Georgia, was a housewife. She comes from a family of seven children, namely three sons and four daughters. All have passed away.
The centenarian was religiously married to Mr Xavier Richecotee Callou at the age of 23 and civilly married at the age of 26. She worked as a maid with no fixed employer and had two sons and two daughters, and three of them are still alive. Mrs Callou has ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mrs Callou is ambulant and enjoy all her faculties though to a lesser extent. She has no major health problems but suffers from hypertension. She attributes her longevity to her unconditional faith in God.
