NGOs and Charities to benefit from Wage Assistance Scheme

The government has agreed to extend the Wage Assistance Scheme to cover, during the COVID-19 curfew period, a charitable institution approved by the Director-General of the Mauritius Revenue Authority or registered under the Registration of Associations Act. All registered employers are eligible under the Wage Assistance Scheme, but the Mauritius Revenue Authority had rejected applications from charitable institutions, such as schools, who operate on a non-profit making basis but who employ workers. Following an appeal from some institutions, the government has responded favourably to correct this anomaly. Henceforth, charitable institutions and NGOs who are registered employers can be eligible under the Wage Assistance Scheme.
